Premarital Counseling: Week 4

This weeks Premarital Class was a Fight Class.

Let's face it guys, we are GOING to fight with our men. It is inevitable. The key thing is to know how to fight so that it is not destructive to our relationships.

We got some pretty amazing advice, but this is what stood out in my mind...

If you have fights, then you should always follow the following guidelines. If you do, you can make it through anything.

Face each other - eye to eye
Ignore distractions - stay on the subject
Guard your tongue - no name calling "James 3:5-6"
Halt the history - bringing up th past communicates, "you are NOT forgiven". God brings up history to remind us of his unfailing love for us, not to condemn us.
Touch - holding hands softens the heart
Stay in there - "finish the fight"

Surgeons during long operations would like to quit; go home and get 8 hours of sleep, but they can't. The open wound needs to be cleaned and sewn up to heal; so do arguments.

If you remember to fight with the FIGHTS acronym then you can get through it without causing destruction to your relationship. It will not be easy, but I know that all of us can do it! :)

How do you fight?

DIY flowers Part Deux

Yesterday I shared our DIY bridesmaid bouquet experience with you.

The fun did not stop there!

Ever wonder what the heck the bridesmaids should do with their bouquets after the ceremony is over?! Well, I have your solution here!

I had purchased vases for the bridesmaids to place their bouquets in at Michael's for about $1.50. They are so simple yet elegant and I LOVE them!

Once again, the fun did not stop there...

I was not satisfied with the bouquet just chillin in an empty vase like that... so, I conveniently had purchased some pearl beads (from none other than Michael's) and places some pearls in the vase.

I felt like it was such a simple touch that really added a lot.

Doesn't the bouquet look like fireworks?!

These can either become your centerpieces, or they can be scattered around your reception site, or they can line your head table.

What do you think!?

How are you going to use the bouquets after the ceremony?

DIY flowers (as promised)

After having, not one, but TWO bad experiences with florists, my Martha Stewart Mom and I were determined to put together bridesmaid bouquets that would satisfy our mental picture as well as our wallets.

We purchased ONE bunch of million star baby's breath for $5 at a wholesale florist (which I just saw at Vons for the same price). Then, we went to work.

We started by pulling off the branches that were low. So that we did not waste anything, we used the lower branches as part of the bouquet. We gathered the pulled off branches and brought them up to be gathered with the rest.

My mom had seen on Martha Stewart that you should place a rubber band around the gathered stems. We did that here:

(Nice cleavage, eh)

Then we wrapped the stem with gorgeous green and gold ribbon that I conveniently had on hand. We pinned it in place with pearl ended bout pins that I also conveniently had on hand.

And... the finished product!!!!!

They turned out bigger than I expected! On the big day, we will probably make them a little smaller (which means we will need fewer bunches).

So, what do you think? Should we rock these and give the bird to the florist that wanted to charge us $40 per bouquet!?

FLOWERS ARE RIDICULOUS!!!

So, we had the meeting with the florist on Saturday. It went really well until she gave us the final total.

We asked this florist for the same exact stuff as the other florist, yet somehow the florist from Saturday wanted to charge us $971!!!! What the heck?! Do they think I want this kind of plant for my wedding or something?!

[source]

She wanted to charge us $40 for EACH bridesmaid bouquet! WE ARE ONLY DOING BABY'S BREATH PEOPLE?!

It was absolutely absurd.

So, my mom and I took your great advice and attempted to make them ourselves. If they turned out okay, then it would only cost about $5.00 per bouquet rather than $40!

So, how did they turn out?

We will have to save that for another post. ;)

I know, I am mean, right?!

It is worth the wait!

Have any florists tried to take advantage of you?!

Take care until next time,

Answers to Ask me anything!!!!

Yes, I know I asked you to ask me anything a long time ago, but it is better late than never, right?!

Ok: My question is, what has been the most memorable date you and your fiance have had together?

The obvious answer to this would be the night we got engaged, so I will say that that night doesn't count. The date that sticks out in my mind is when myMr and I took my niece and nephew bowling. Just wait... I promise it gets better.

While we were bowling, there was a man next to us who spoke to myMr a bit while I was helping the kiddies bowl. He was about to leave, so he came up to us and asked if he could say a prayer for us. Of course we said yes, so right there, in the middle of the bowling alley, we joined hands and he prayed. I had no idea what he was going to say. He began saying how he saw such a spark in myMr and I that he wanted to pray to have God take care of us in our long journey together. At this point, myMr and I had only been dating for a couple months. We were not even close to engaged. It was pretty spectacular.

That's a good question she gave! What has been your funnest (is that a word? lol) wedding project or thing to do..

Oooh that is a toughie... the best one has probably been the shirts that I made for my Bridesmaids to ask them to be in my wedding. Don't you guys feel cheated now that you know I made these and haven't shared them with you?! I got black tank tops from Old Navy and I rhinestoned swarovski crystals on them. If you are going to rhinestone t-shirts, you MUST use Hot Fix rhinestones! They are SUPER easy to do and they stay on!!!

How exactly did you meet the future Mr in college?

MyMr and I met in the computer lab at UCSD. I tutored his computer science class and he had a crush on me. He waited until he was done with the class before he made his move. I went into the lab to work on a project. Little did I know that myMr was on the prowl. haha He was already in the lab, so he left and walked right back in so that it wouldn't be obvious that he was moving just to sit right next to me. He sat next to me, I introduced myself, and we INSTANTLY hit it off. It was a match made in the computer lab! :)

What has changed in your idea for the style of the wedding? (decor, DIY projects, colors, guest list?)

Honestly, pretty much EVERYTHING!!! First we started off with a yellow June wedding with about 250 people. Everything was going to have a real summery feel to it, and I was not going to do many DIY projects. Now, we are having a fern green and gold October wedding with about 100 people. AND I am doing SEVERAL DIY projects.

I guess that is what happens when you have 2 years to plan the wedding AND you are EXTREMELY indecisive!! haha :)

Premarital Counseling: Week 3

This weeks premarital counseling class was pretty cool!

We went around in a circle discussing something that many couples do not discuss together: Fear.

Realistically, EVERY person in a relationship has some sort of fear, no matter what stage of the relationship you are in. It is SUPER important to discuss these fears with your significant other.

Many men have the fear that they will not be able to financially provide for his wife. This is a VERY real fear that needs to be discussed.

Most fears can quickly be calmed with a simple, honest conversation, as long as the other person responds with an open heart.

So, this week, an exercise for you and your hubby to be is to share your fears, weaknesses, and more importantly have your spouse share how they can help reduce your fear. It will be a neat way to bring you closer and more on the same page. It really was a special conversation for myMr and me.
